Tony Recupero

President and CEO

Tony brings over 20 years of experience in the medical device industry to Baxano, Inc. Tony served as Vice President of Sales for Kyphon, Inc., joining the company at commercial inception and spearheading Kyphon’s significant revenue growth over a period of five years.  At Kyphon, Tony led one of the largest and most effective direct sales forces in the spine market.  Prior to Kyphon, Tony was the National Sales Manager for Sulzer Spine-Tech, Inc., where he was responsible for revenue growth of the BAK fusion cage and other spinal hardware. Tony started his medical device career in sales and sales management with United States Surgical Corporation.

Tony is a graduate of The General Management Program at Harvard Business School and holds a B.A. in Communications from State University of New York at Albany.

George Harter

Chief Financial Officer

George brings over 15 years of experience in the medical devices industry to Baxano, Inc.  Prior to joining Baxano, George served as the Chief Financial Officer for Acclarent, Inc. from 2005 to 2011, through its acquisition by Johnson & Johnson. From September 2003 to April 2005, George served as Chief Financial Officer for Velocimed, an interventional cardiology company. Prior to Velocimed, George held roles at other health care companies including Boston Scientific.

George received his B.A. in Economics from the University of California, Los Angeles and his M.B.A. from Case Western Reserve University.

Mike Wallace

Executive Vice President, Operations

Mike brings more than 18 years of research and development experience in the medical device industry to Baxano, Inc. He currently oversees R&D, Operations, Clinical Research, Regulatory and Quality Affairs.

Previously, Mike held executive positions at BARRX Medical, Boston Scientific and Target Therapeutics managing research and development, engineering, advanced research, new business development and operations. During his tenure, Mike led several product development programs to successful multi-million dollar launches.

Prior to BARRX Medical, Boston Scientific and Target Therapeutics, Mike was an orthopedic research engineer for the University of California, Davis and also a process development/manufacturing engineer for W.L. Gore & Associates.

Mike holds an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering with a bioengineering emphasis from the University of California, Davis and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Delaware. He has co-authored six articles published in peer-reviewed technical journals and is an inventor on over 100 issued or pending U.S. patents.

Amie Borgstrom

Vice President, Marketing

Amie brings over 15 years of medical device experience to the Baxano team. Prior to joining Baxano, Amie ran a successful strategic marketing consulting business with clients ranging from early stage venture-funded US medical device companies to mid-size public Chinese healthcare companies.  Amie has held roles in marketing and product development at several healthcare companies including Abbott Vascular and DePuy Spine, a Johnson & Johnson company. She has worked closely with leading physicians worldwide to develop and successfully launch eight new medical devices and is an inventor on 42 issued or pending US patents.

Amie holds an M.B.A. from the Stanford Graduate School of Business, M.S.E. from Columbia University, and B.S.E. from the University of Pennsylvania.

Greg Welsh

Vice President, Operations

Greg has more than 24 years of operations and engineering experience in the medical device industry. He has held various management positions with increasing responsibility at a variety of companies from start-up ventures to global Fortune 500 corporations including Baxter Healthcare, Target Therapeutics, Boston Scientific, Cierra, and Avantis Medical Systems.

Prior to Baxano, Inc., Greg led the production operations at a startup Avantis Medical Systems.  He held various senior management positions at Boston Scientific/Target Therapeutics and was responsible for all catheter, intracranial stent, and IVUS imaging manufacturing engineering including new products, production and product transfers to Ireland.  At Edwards, a division of Baxter Healthcare, Greg served in various engineering, supervisory, and project leadership roles in R&D new product development, Manufacturing Engineering and product transfers to Puerto Rico, Mexico and The Netherlands.

Greg holds a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and holds a Management Development Program Certificate from the School of Business at University of Southern California.

Christine Mathews

Vice President, Human Resources

Christine has more than 20 years of experience in Human Resources, the last 12 in the medical device industry. 

Prior to joining Baxano, she led a full services Human Resources consulting firm specializing in healthcare companies in the start-up, development, and commercial stages.  From 2005-2012 she and her team worked with approximately 30 companies providing both strategic and operational Human Resources services.

Prior to founding her own business, Christine served in senior Human Resources leadership positions for both Novacept and Cytyc.  Earlier in her career she worked in Human Resources in the high technology industry at Ungermann-Bass (a subsidiary of Tandem Computers) and in operations management for JP Morgan and Company.

Christine holds an A.B. in Human Biology from Stanford University.
